Conditions we treat

Some of the common conditions we treat can be found below. For more information, or to discuss your individual case, please feel free to contact us.

Ingrown toenails

Ingrown toenails, also known as onychocryptosis, are a condition in which the nail edge digs into the flesh. This can be quite painful and can lead to an open sore and infections. At Step to Stride Podiatry we treat this condition by gently extracting a thin edge of the nail usually with a special file the use of clippers and a scalpel. Patients generally feel relief straight away with this procedure.

Athletes foot – Tinea Pedis

Athletes foot or tinea is caused by tiny fungal spores which invade the skin. These spores love moist warm environments (think of your bathroom floors if they haven’t been cleaned for a while). The tinea spores eat skin and make the skin fragile, itchy and more likely to tear. As such, it should be treated sooner rather than later.

Callous/hard skin

Callous affects many people and is a natural response of our skin to pressure. Skin that is under pressure, thickens in response. However as with all things, moderation is key, when it callous gets too much as can be found in feet that have defined pressure points, this can cause discomfort, pain and can even crack through and fissure. We treat callous and hard skin using a combination of debridement (using the scalpel to gently shave off callous), professional files, and advice on creams and care for ongoing management.

Corns

Corns are concentrated cones of callous that can feel like stepping on a sharp stone. They develop in regions of concentrated pressure on our feet and can be debilitating. We treat these by  using our scalpel to “enucleate” (extract) the corn. We also offer different ways to prevent this from happening as often including offloading the area of concentrated pressure.

Warts

Verrucae pedis or foot warts thrive in moist environments and can penetrate the skin through touch. Warts are a type of virus called human papillomavirus . They live in the dermal layer of the skin. They usually have a cauliflower like appearance and can be painful with pressure. At Step to stride we use a combination of debridement (pairing the rough skin overlying the wart down), offloading the wart site to prevent pressure and salycilic acid in controlled amounts to clear the wart. Warts may take 3 to 5 visits before they are cleared.

Forefoot pain

Forefoot pain can take many forms, from arthritic causes to pressure related causes like morton’s neuroma and sesamoiditis to plantar plate tearing. You can expect a thorough examination by our Podiatrist to determine the cause of your injury and a plan of care that can include shoe modifications, targeted exercises and stretches, and education. Our aim is to make you pain free as quickly as possible.

Midfoot pain/plantar fasciitis

More information coming soon. Please email us for now id this is your concern.

Rearfoot pain/Heel pain

Heel and ankle pain originates from many causes. There are pains associated with fractures and sprains around the ankle. There are pain from nerve pains associated with nerve compression around the middle ankle. Biomechanics also plays a role in heel pain/issues.
